(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) Feb. 22, 2009 – Inpop/Aware/Columbia Records singer-songwriter Mat Kearney will release his third studio project, City of Black & White, on May 19, 2009. Following the success of Nothing Left To Lose, Kearney returns with an album of evolved sound and a world of new experiences.
Winding down a whirlwind five years on the road as a new artist, Kearney recently settled into his new hometown of Nashville, TN. It is there that he found the songs for City of Black & White, opening up the writing process to friends and local musicians, crafting songs such as “Fire and Rain,” “Here We Go” and the album’s lead single, “Closer To Love,” going for adds at Christian AC and CHR radio on March 20.
“Inpop first discovered Mat Kearney in 2004, and it is thrilling to see how far Mat has come,” says Shara Katerberg-Hsu, director of marketing for Inpop Records. “Due to our partnership with Aware/Columbia, City of Black & White will be available in Christian retail stores as well as in mainstream and digital outlets, with Inpop handling all Christian market radio promotions, publicity and marketing."
Kearney initially sprung onto the music scene in 2004 with Bullet, his first national release and label debut on Inpop Records. Bullet spawned the hit song “Undeniable,” which broke a record for largest number of out-of-the-box radio adds on R&R’s Christian CHR chart. His following grew rapidly in both Christian and mainstream music circles, grabbing the attention of Aware Records, label home to John Mayer, Train and Five For Fighting. Kearney and Inpop Records inked a general-market partnership with Aware/Columbia Records in 2005.
Kearney released his sophomore project, Nothing Left To Lose, in 2006, garnering him Dove Awards for New Artist of the Year as well as Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song (“Trainwreck”). The album has scanned nearly 400,000 copies to date. Songs from the album have received prominent licensing placements on popular shows including Grey’s Anatomy,” “Bones,” and “Friday Night Lights.” Kearney has toured with John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, The Fray and Jason Mraz. He was additionally featured as a VH1 You Oughta Know artist and headlined the first VH1 “You Oughta Know” tour. Tour plans for 2009 are currently underway.
